3 Must Use Demographics Tools for Affiliate Marketing

Knowing your target market makes your job as an affiliate marketer much easier. Without knowing your target market your message may just fall flat. Imagine your prospective buyers are predominantly female, 35+ and college graduates, your teen focused, heavy metal site won’t have a lot success with your target demography, will it.
Fortunately there are a few free demographics tools that will help you understand your target audience before you are too far into your marketing efforts. Don’t expect these tools to give you absolute figures, but they can be safely used to gather a overall idea about who to target.
To research, first you will need to gather some of your root keywords and the website urls of a few major players in the given niche. Now head to the following places and start your demographics research.
For our post here I used the root keyword VOIP and url of vonage.com. Let’s these tools say about my target demography.
- MSN adCenter Labs Demographics Prediction Tool
- Quantacast
- Alexa
With MSN adCenter tool you can search based on a keyword as well as with a url. Our test for both the keyword and url gave us the following results.
I won’t go into the details of the result. But you can easily see, it breaks the demographics based on sex and age group. And the 25-49 age group bracket has the maximum number of your target audience.
Quantacast gives you a high level traffic report for websites as well as a demographic break up based on age, sex, income and education level.
For our research, it seems our best traget is 18-49 years, Caucasians with College or higher education.
Now let’s look at Alexa.com. Type in the website url and then click on the ‘see complete stats’ and then click on the ‘Audience’ tab to see the demographic data.
Again as you can see below, our best demographics to target falls under the 35-64 age group, with some college education.
Point to note: You will not get the same exact results from all the three sites discussed above, for the obvious reason that all thre of have their own way of collecting data. But overall they will give you a clear picture about who you should target for your niche. With this info, as an affiliate marketer, you can better align your website, your promotional method your message to be successful.
